Shell Grotto, Greater Manchester
A modern shell grotto commissioned for a private garden near Manchester. The structure is a fibreglass sphere sunken into the ground with wild flowers planted on top. The interior is completely lined with shells in a formal chevron pattern. The chevrons create a star pattern where they meet at the apex of the sphere.
Pitshill Shell House, West Sussex
A circular shell house built c1810 in the grounds of a private house near Petworth was, after 200 years in damp conditions, in desperate need of restoration. Katherine painstakingly cleaned and restored the shellwork which decorates the internal walls of the building, infilling gaps as much as possible with original shells, minerals, fossils and corals which had been salvaged from the shell house floor over the years. Katherine then designed and created the shellwork for the previously undecorated domed ceiling.
